Big Scene Coming Up For Cristina/Owen And Other Grey's Tidbits

In the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, Grey's boss Shonda Rhimes shared how she spent a day at work (March 5), and here are some interesting tidbits that she revealed about Grey's Anatomy and Cristina/Owen:

Grey's Tidbits

Cristina/Owen

There's a big controversial scene coming up between Cristina and Owen that Sandra Oh and Kevin McKidd shot that day, which is to air in a future episode. Here's what she said about that:

And as for the season finale of Grey's, Ms. Rhimes tweeted yesterday that the finale is going to have a "shocking ending", which is to be expected with the cast contracts still being up in the air.

Grey's Anatomy: Looking For A Job In The City...

Latest spoilers from TV Line regarding Cristina, Alex and Meredith who will finally be finishing their residency at the end of this season and are on the lookout for for new job opportunities outside Seattle Grace, which fittingly reflects the cast's yet unresolved contract situation:

grey's anatomy cristina yang meredith yang

And while that story point would seem designed to afford Shonda Rhimes an easy out in the event that any original cast members don’t ink new deals beyond this season, she maintains this was always the plan.
“Every kid going for an attending spot or a fellowship … would be out there all over the country interviewing for spots, and that’s what they’re doing,” she told me.
As for the big picture, she says the job hunt arc “is setting up a lot of what’s going on at the end of the season, and it also weighs very heavily on them” – as well as on longtime viewers.
“You really get a sense of nostalgia, that this is the ‘graduating class’ that might not be together anymore. It’s really beautiful to watch our actors portray, and it’s been wonderful to write.”

Sandra Oh on Awkward Fan Encounters At Korean Spas

Here's more from the Q&A from the Grey's benefit where Sandra Oh talks about fan encounters at Korean Spas:

Sandra Oh: "I love going to Korean spas and sometimes it gets a little uncomfortable when... you're naked, and someone comes up to you and says 'I just love your work' and you're just like 'Great, thanks!' and try to be really cool about the nakedness."

Update: We've already posted all the Sandra parts from the Q&A, but a kind user on YouTube has now uploaded the Q&A in its entirety which you can watch here: Part 1 & part 2.

Grey's Anatomy: Spoilers on Cristina/Owen and Residents' Medical Boards

While there's still no news on the cast's contract talks, there are a few spoilers about what's coming up in the last few episodes this season. There's some good news for the defeated Cristina/Owen fans and some drama for some of the residents as they take their medical boards:

Blairlvr: I don't know how much more Cristina and Owen heartache I can take! My favorite TV couple, hands down, and Shonda Rhimes better not break them up for good.
Fear not! My sense is they are one of Shonda's favorite couples too, and although she told us Cristina and Owen will get "darker," she said that is "before it gets better." It gets better, people! Also, you can bet good money those two will keep sharing lots and lots of screen time for as long as they are both on the show, because, per Shonda:
"I've been having the time of my life writing for Sandra [Oh] and Kevin [McKidd] because honestly it doesn't matter what I write for them, they hit it out of the park. It's amazing."

Question: Any update on the Grey’s Anatomy contract situation? —Kim
Ausiello: Nothing official, but perhaps a clue can be find in this fresh batch of intel I just procured: According to a source, the medical boards don’t go well for at least two of the show’s docs — one gets a ginormous, stress-induced spontaneous nosebleed (mid-test!) and another fails the first of three sections when he arrives late.

Sandra Oh: Three Things About Kevin McKidd

There was a Q&A with the Grey cast after the benefit, and Sandra Oh received a question about what's  her favourite thing about working with Kevin McKidd. Listen to her hilarious response in the video below:

Video credit: colettevalois

Sandra Oh: "I can’t talk enough about Kevin McKidd. Yes, talented, blah blah blah blah blah blah, that sort of thing.
Okay, more than one thing. One, he’s a great kisser. Two, he has amazing skin. I get to touch it sometimes. [To Kevin] Yeah, it’s your skin and your lips, babe. [To audience] He is a happily married man!"

Scream by a fan from the audience: "Save them [Cristina/Owen], Shonda!"

Kevin has also said quite a few nice things about working with Sandra Oh over the years that we've posted here, so browse this category for a refresher.

Sandra Oh and Eric Dane Take On Emcee Duties At Grey's Benefit [Update]

Sandra Oh and co-star Eric Dane were the only cast members who didn't sing at the Grey's Anatomy benefit last night, so instead they served as emcees at the event. Reporters from TV Guide and The Hollywood Reporter were at the event and here are their recaps regarding Sandra's participation in the show:

UPDATE - Mar 21: Buddy TV recap added.

sandra oh eric dane grey's anatomy benefit

Update Mar 21 - Buddy TV

First up? Sandra Oh (Cristina Yang) who acted as the emcee of the festivities. It turns out that Sandra shares Cristina's blazing intelligence but her warmth and effervescence are the complete opposite of Dr. Yang. She had me charmed in seconds. Eric Dane (Mark Sloan) was Sandra's comedic foil for the evening as the two non-singers triumphed in an extended gag that centered around Eric wanting to sing in the show and Sandra trying to make sure that was never going to happen. The high point of that farce came somewhere in the second act as Eric tried to slip the Grey's Anatomy Music Supervisor his demo CD. Classic.

Daily Bruin

Despite the fact that most of the cast performed, the evening was not without its timely moments of wit and humor provided by the hosts Eric Dane and Sandra Oh, whose comedic relief smoothly transitioned the show between the emotional ballads and off-beat pieces.

TV Guide:

Sandra Oh and Eric Dane acted as emcees for the night, though Dane desperately wanted to join in on the action. Apparently, he can't sing a lick, but that didn't stop him from trying to jam out on a guitar and even slipping Grey's music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas his demo, which she promptly tossed.

Following a special performance by Ingrid Michaelson, Oh then asked the crowd if Grey's should do another musical. Though the rowdy crowd begged for more, the cast decided to read fan comments that both praised and panned the show's previous effort. The cast decided it would be a while before they'd try it again. "Maybe Season 13," they joked.

The Hollywood Reporter:

During the light-hearted show, a spirited Oh (Cristina) acted as a de-facto emcee and introduced segments of the evening that served not only to entertain but also shed light on how the medical drama came to feature a musical episode as well as how music serves as a character on the Shonda Rhimes show.
Co-star Dane (Mark), meanwhile, provided a comedic injection, taking nearly every opportunity he could to make a play to sing during the fundraiser. (Neither he, nor Oh performed.)

Acknowledging that the musical endeavor wasn't exactly a critical (and sometimes fan) favorite, the cast took turns reading feedback about the episode that was both positive and negative in a playful round that culminated with Pickens (Richard) playfully suggesting the series make a second attempt at a musical episode -- in Season 13.

Grey's Anatomy: Cristina and Meredith Take San Francisco

Last week Sandra Oh and co-stars Patrick Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo were spotted at an airport shooting a scene for episode 8.20 of Grey's Anatomy. The lovely Chandra Wilson is directing the episode following that and in an interview with Glamour she revealed what Cristina, Meredith and the other residents are are up to, and giving away a few other tidbits about the episode:

sandra oh cristina yang grey's anatomy on the set 8.21

Glamour: Haha, ok, what can you tell us about the episode you're directing? Any hints about the storyline?
Chandra: Our residents right now are in the process of studying for the boards. My episode is where they have to go up to San Francisco because I believe that's where the boards are going to happen.
It's the anxiety of dealing with that and if they're ready for that, and then the grown-up attendings that have been left behind are on a pretty big case. Someone runs into a telephone pole and hurts themselves pretty badly. So we're all on that case, and dealing with the Teddy/Owen dynamic also. They're still trying to find their way back to a friendship.
Then there are some crazy other things happening, but mainly our residents are away, and our attendings are at home trying to be grown ups. I think it airs the last week of April, because I'm the fourth episode from the finale.

And in other spoiler news, here is a cryptic tidbit from EW's Spoiler Room about one of the show's couples:

I hope my Grey’s question gets in. I know it’s late, but I just watched this week’s episode. SO heartbreaking on many levels! Cristina and Owen, chief and Adele, and even Mer and Der. Any chance of happier times for any them? — Kat
Depends on your definition of happy. Some tragic stuff is in store for one pair, but it might end up opening a door we thought was closed.

Kevin McKidd: Dark Times Ahead For Cristina and Owen, But Also Hope

Earlier tonight, Grey's boss Shonda Rhimes tweeted that things would be painful for Cristina and Owen  in tonight's episode - while also promising that there is hope in the future - and she certainly did deliver on the pain part. Owen admitted that he did cheat on Cristina, just not with the pretty nurse, but with another mystery woman. (Kudos to Sandra Oh and Kevin McKidd for their acting performances in that final scene.) Next new episode of Grey's airs on April 5th, so we will have to wait until then to see the fall out from this.

Kevin McKidd and co-star Patrick Dempsey discussed the rocky couple in an interview with THR, and while Kevin McKidd warned that things will get worse, there is still hope for Cristina and Owen:

"There's a great debate there for what the dynamic is, with what Cristina has done to this marriage and her choice and what Owen's choice is and his behavior," co-star Patrick Dempsey (Derek) told The Hollywood Reporter during a recent set visit. "There's a really interesting conversation to be had because of those choices: How do you move on? How does that change the dynamic of the relationship? If you can really dive into that -- there's two betrayals, very big ones. I don't know how they sustain that relationship."

"I don't know how you come back from that kind of betrayal," he says. "Certainly if you're married, the notion of the next step would be to have children and if that's been taken away, I would find it very hard for Owen to stay in that relationship."

While McKidd warns there are tough times ahead, he remains optimistic for the beleaguered couple. "I think they're meant for each other," he says. "I hold out faith in Cristina and Owen, even though they go to the darkest places out of all the couples on the show."

"It's going to get worse but it's going to get better soon," McKidd warns.

The actor, who will participate with fellow cast members in Sunday's UCLA live Grey's Anatomy musical fundraiser, notes that the "odd couple" just seems to work despite each of them being deeply flawed.

"Within the first week of meeting her he almost strangled her to death; that's not a good starting point for any relationship," he says, recalling the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder he struggled with when the duo first connected.

...

"His life is in so much turmoil right now that I wouldn't be surprised if something like that came back," he says. "He's got a handle on it right now … but I wouldn't be surprised if some symptoms flare up at some point because of what's going on in his personal and professional life."
And while it appears that the dark will continue to get darker in the immediate future, McKidd remains ever optimistic about Owen being able to bounce back and rebuild from a year that has seen his marriage and career pushed to the brink. "I think he's going to definitely get on his way to that and that rebuilding will happen as we go into the next season as well."

Both Shonda Rhimes and Kevin McKidd promised hope and that things will get better for the couple, but we have a feeling that the viewers won't be as forgiving.

So the question is, do you think that they should break up for good or will you continue to root for Cristina and Owen as a couple?

Cristina/Owen: Is Owen Really Cheating On Cristina?

Lots of Grey's Anatomy scoop today as Grey's boss Shonda Rhimes is promoting the Grey's benefit which takes place this Sunday.

The latest episode of Grey's Anatomy left us all wondering if Owen is cheating on Cristina or if it's all in her head and if you don't want to wait for the episode tonight to find out, this is what Ms. Rhimes told TVLine in an interview:

TVLINE | Turning now to some Grey’s storylines…. In your mind, should we be questioning whether Owen is being unfaithful, or is that strictly in Cristina’s head? Shonda Rhimes: That’s a really good question…. I should hope that you’re questioning it.

She’s just in such a paranoid, fragile place right now.
She is, but I also think she’s a smart woman who feels like something’s wrong. She might not be correct about what’s wrong, but….
And it is Summer Glau, so….
I know, right? She only did two episodes for us, but it was really great to have her. She did an amazing job.

Cristina/Owen: Challenging The Traditional Gender Roles

According to Shonda Rhimes things are to get about worse for Cristina and Owen before they get better, and she explained to E! Online that with this storyline she wants to challenge the traditional gender roles and the sterotype that all women want to have children. Read her explanation below:

Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Owen (Kevin McKidd): "It's going to get darker, people! It's going to get darker before it gets better," Shonda reveals. Say it together now, "Crowen" fans: But whhhhyyyy?
"Cristina has gone through tremendous personal growth," Shonda explains. "For me, I was really interested in exploring [how] Cristina is, first and foremost before she's anything else, a surgeon and she's a person of gift. When that happens in men, everyone accepts it. When it happens in women, it's a very different thing.
I was really interested in exploring that with that character because there's something really wonderful about this idea of this extraordinarily talented, gifted woman who is unapologetic about her desire not to have children and to have things sort of go her way and what that means when you're in a relationship. It's very complex." Understatement!

Grey's Anatomy: Graduation Times and Cristina and Owen's Rough Patch

TV Guide has published a longer interview with Grey's Anatomy boss Shonda Rhimes where she talks about Cristina, Alex and Meredith exchanging their light blue scrubs for the dark blue ones and graduating to become attendings by the end of the season and why Cristina and Owen are going through a rough patch. Here is a excerpt from the interview:

Cristina, Meredith and Alex graduate

Speaking of, the original interns are in their final year of residency. Will their transition be a major part of the last few episodes?
Rhimes: Yeah, it really is and we've been feeling it in the writers' room. As we read the scripts, there's a strong sense of nostalgia because it really is an end of an era for these characters and that's a milestone for us. They're finishing their residency, they're going to be Attendings. I suppose you could keep them as residents forever but that just didn't feel right in terms of what we wanted to do.

The alt-reality episode was a good way to call back to a lot of those moments from the past seasons. Will there be more of those moments?
Rhimes: Yeah, I think there's a little bit of that. There are people coming full circle and it's really the time to look at them, see how they've grown and how they've changed from the people that we first met.

On Cristina and Owen

Not everyone can get a happy ending. Why did you choose Cristina and Owen to be the couple that hit the most rough patches?

Rhimes: That's interesting. I guess I don't look at it that way, like I'm not trying to make Cristina and Owen hit rough patches because not everyone can get a happy ending. I really look at the characters and think, "What is the journey that they're on? What do they still have left to learn? What struggles are they still juggling?" I try to look at them as people and it feels to me like Cristina still has a lot of unresolved issues. And more importantly, she's in love with a person who has some unresolved issues with her as well.
But, to me, Cristina Yang is an extraordinarily gifted surgeon first before she's anything else. While she's expanded and grown in a lot of areas, that is still who she is and she fully expects and believes that if Owen's going to be in love with her, he's a man who's got to be in love with an extraordinarily gifted surgeon first and deal with all that comes with that.

You've really gut-punched the audience a couple times this season with them.
Rhimes: I know, and I'm not really trying to. It truly isn't about playing with the audience. It really is about this journey for these characters and how to keep it honest. Sandra [Oh] and Kevin [McKidd] have been really engaged and they have to spend a lot of time together talking about this stuff. You have big arguments in terms of what we're going to do, because we all feel really passionately that they can all come to an agreement. After eight seasons to have a cast that's not phoning it in, it's the most exciting thing in the world.

Updates On The Grey's Anatomy Benefit and Cast Contracts

A few updates from Grey's boss Shonda Rhimes who had a chat with TV Guide regarding the Grey's Anatomy benefit and cast contracts...

As you may know, Sandra Oh and a majority of her cast members are putting together a benefit for The Actors Fund where they'll be performing songs from the musical episode of Grey's as well as other songs from the show. Singer/songwriter Ingrid Michaelson who's had a few of her songs featured on the show - like the one in this epic Cristina scene - will be joining the cast on stage.

Sandra Oh did not sing in the musical episode, but according to Grey's boss she'll be participating in the benefit by doing "a couple of special things" instead. No further details on what that might be, but a few years ago the cast did another benefit where the non-singing cast members introduced the performers and performed readings of fan mail and fan fiction.

There are still plenty of tickets left for the benefit which will take place on March 18th in LA, so get yours here.

In the interview Shonda Rhimes also commented on the current contract status of the original cast members, saying that everybody wants to come back, but that there's "money stuff" to be resolved. This is what she said about that:

TV Guide Magazine: You must know by now if Patrick and Ellen will be back next season.
Rhimes: I have no idea. I have my fingers crossed. What I think is really lovely is that everybody wants to come back. There's [money] stuff happening. I am [confident], but I have a plan in place for the finale that can occur regardless of who is staying. Our goal is to have Derek and Meredith move in to the completed dream house. [A real L.A. home will be used.] And our residents will be interviewing for jobs all around the country.

It Could Be The End Of Cristina And Owen As We Know It

If we were to make a list of the most popular topics here on Sandra Oh News, anything to do with Cristina and Owen on Grey's Anatomy would be in the top 5. Things have been looking gloomy for this couple for a while though, and for fans hoping for a happily ever after, Sandra Oh revealed in an interview with TV Guide - who met up with her at a benefit yesterday - that she doesn't see much hope for the couple at the moment.

In the interview Sandra Oh gave her thoughts on the ongoing Cristina/Owen storyline, actress Mariska Hargitay and her foundation The Joyful Heart which helps sexual assault victims, and its connection to an upcoming storyline on Grey's:

"It's just sad and hard right now," Oh told TV Guide Magazine at Sunday's L.A. benefit for Mariska Hargitay's Joyful Heart Foundation which supports survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse. "If there's [hope], I can't see it right now."

In the episode that aired Feb. 23, Cristina started to suspect that Owen was having an affair, and those suspicions will continue in the March 15 episode, "One Step Too Far."

"What I really am happy with, is that a dissolution of a relationship — if it is a dissolution — takes a long time and is painful. We're spending time with them, seeing it happen," says Oh. "And not quickly, but painfully, day by day."

"It's real, it's messy and it's also why we root for them so much," adds costar Kim Raver.
[...]
Oh also says that the subject of sexual assault will come up in an future episode, and the entire cast will be involved. "We're dealing with a very dramatic side of this issue," she says. "I really admire Mariska and her work, not only on her show and the influence and the impact that she has on the show for this work, but it translates also in our work on Grey's Anatomy."

"It touches all of us, even if we don't know that it does," adds Raver. "I think the fact that we're discussing it is the first step to aiding it."

Five Years

The site has been online for five years now and it's thanks to all you peeps who keep reading, linking, commenting, contributing and liking.

Our first header five years ago.

(Recently The New York Times linked to us, so we must be doing something right. #humblebrag)

We try to keep the site clean and easy to navigate, but you get blind to your own stuff, so if you have any suggestions for improvements or general likes and dislikes, we want to hear it. Post in the comments or use to contact form.

Thanks everyone and cheers!
