The Brilliant Sandra Oh And Ellen Pompeo

The Grey's Anatomy season finale was all about our beloved 'twisted sisters', Cristina Yang and Meredith Grey, and some brilliant acting from Sandra Oh and Ellen Pompeo. Here is a roundup of some reviews of Sandra's (and co-stars Ellen Pompeo and Chandra Wilson's) performance in the season finale.

  • All in all, it was a very well-done finale, but it got away from the writers just a little at the end. With the shooter seemingly everywhere you didn't want him and everyone trapped with precisely the most dramatic person possible, it got a little ridiculous. But in the end, the acting — including big nights for Chandra Wilson, Sandra Oh and Ellen Pompeo — carried it off. - MSNBC

    • Unfortunately for Langston, he doesn't have Cristina Yang to come to his rescue, as she did on Grey's by operating on Derek. The finale boasted fine work from all of the show's regulars, including from the always wonderful Chandra Wilson and the sometimes unfairly undervalued Ellen Pompeo. But it was a particularly good episode for Sandra Oh, capping what has been a very good season. - USA Today

        • We have one word to sum up last night's season finale of Grey's Anatomy: Emmys. Emmys all around. One for Ellen Pompeo. One for Sandra Oh. One For Chandra Wilson. One for Mandy Moore . The list goes on and on and on. - Perez Hilton

          • Amazing acting all around, from Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey to Sandra Oh (give this woman an Emmy nod) and Chandra Wilson. Uniformly great performances that pulled you in and remained believable. Yes, everyone has been traumatized. Yes, Derek and Alex may have long recoveries. Yes, Meredith lost the baby she only just realized she wanted. And, yes, several characters seem like they'll be permanently changed(*). (*) Again, I can't understate how good Oh was here, or how well-written Cristina was as she finally came into her own. The moment when she told Meredith she was a very good surgeon "for a resident" was such a perfect lowering of all the shields the character has kept up for six seasons, and her refusal to put down her scalpel even as she was nakedly terrified by Clark's gun was a fantastic sequence for Oh. - Zap2It

              • There was no opportunity for suspense, or tears, or anger, or horror, or some good old-fashioned monologuing left unexplored. Huge stakes, huge emotions, great performances from everybody (though I would say Chandra Wilson and Sandra Oh were particularly great... - HitFix

                • The Grey’s Anatomy two-hour season finale took off with a bang Thursday as viewers watched a mad man shoot his way through Seattle Grace Hospital in his vengeful hunt for Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). An episode that brought out the best in favorites Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), Alex (Justin Chambers), Miranda (Chandra Wilson) and Callie (Sara Ramirez), at one point it had me on my feet shouting “Dr. Yang (Sandra Oh) is the shit!” - Daytime Confidential

                  • Who would live? Who would die? Who would rise to the occasion? Who would crumple in defeat? The acting was uniformly outstanding, with Sandra Oh and Chandra Wilson as particular stand outs. - Fancast

                  • Still, it was a brilliant season finale, well-written by creator Shonda Rimes, beautifully acted (especially by Sandra Oh). - JoyHog

It Is The End Of A Triangle

Great news, Yang/Hunt(ers)! It took a while, but the not-so-popular Cristina/Owen/Teddy triangle is officially over, according to Grey's boss Shonda Rhimes herself, who had a post-season finale chat with EW's Michael Ausiello:

Kim Raver has already been upgraded to a series regular, but some are questioning Teddy’s future now that Owen has chosen Cristina.
                      RHIMES:
This whole idea that Teddy only exists [as part of a triangle is ludicrous]. Teddy is Cristina’s teacher. Derek would be dead if Cristina had not had Teddy around. That’s how I look at it. I will say it again, the studio and network have to renew everyone’s options, and they have not done so yet. But it is my intention that we will see Teddy next year.

When Owen chose Cristina, he really chose her, right?
                      RHIMES:
                      Yes. He definitely chose her.

So that triangle is, for all intents and purposes, over.
                      RHIMES:
                      That triangle is done.

But Cristina broke up with Owen in that episode.
                      RHIMES:
                      That is true.

                      So they’re not technically together.
                      RHIMES:
I tried really hard to get in an Owen-Cristina scene where he holds her after Derek survived. But all my [medical advisers] kept saying, “If Owen holds Cristina, she can no longer operate on Derek. She’s become unsterile.” There was a big fight about it and finally I had to go with “the look.” And I felt like Sandra [Oh] and Kevin [McKidd] adequately and brilliantly portrayed in “the look” that there was still something there.

You previously teased this episode as a game-changer. How has the game been changed?
                      RHIMES:
Here’s why I said that: When you face a situation like this — when the entire hospital has turned into a crime scene — everyone you know has faced life or death. It’s an incredibly traumatic event. Everything you knew, believed, felt, and required of the characters in terms of what their stories have been or what you believed about them no longer exists. Part of what’s interesting about next season is that we can start anywhere — in any emotional state — and almost anything can happen because we just came out of this. It’s not like tomorrow they come back being the exact same characters. They’re all sort of fundamentally changed.

                      Cristina Yang Graduates!

An excerpt from the Grey's writers' blog where Shonda Rhimes talks about the season finale episodes Sanctuary and Death and All His Friends:

Cristina. This finale, especially the second half, belongs to Cristina. Owen chooses her, did you see that? Owen, faced with life or death, knows what he wants and what he wants is some Cristina Yang. But more importantly, Cristina truly comes into her own as a heart surgeon. She’s had numerous teachers, all kinds of setbacks but she finally had the right teacher, she had Teddy, and when she says to herself “pig or cow, Cristina” as she stands over Derek’s chest cavity…that was her graduation. When she refuses to stop operating with a gun literally pressed to her head, that was her commencement. Another part of her graduation? The girl who always had a hard time giving of herself emotionally gives like crazy in this episode. She is willing to die to save Derek because she loves Meredith so much and she promised Mer that she would do her very best work. Cristina Yang graduated tonight. Toss your caps in her honor.

Everything You Need To Know About The Grey's Season Finale

Almost. Forget what you read earlier, with three days to go, Fancast's Matt Mitovich has the real Grey's Anatomy season finale scoop:

Did you watch the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season finale yet? What do you think? – COforever via Twitter

One of the perks of my trip last week to the ‘Lost’ Live concert event was that a little birdie slipped me the first hour of the season ender, which is titled ‘Sanctuary.’ And I’ve also heard bits and pieces about what happens in the back half of the finale. Now, remember when the ABC synopsis came out, saying that “Seattle Grace Hospital is hit with a crisis like no other in its history”? That is most definitely true, when a gunman with a tremendously itchy trigger finger roams the halls. We were also told, “Cristina and Meredith’s surgical skills are put to the ultimate test.” Again, way true. In fact, at the time I joked – joked! – that maybe creepy April was a catalyst in some of this tragedy. Now? I am quite wary of my premonition skills.

Do tell – what crisis will leave Meredith Grey and Yang to be the only surgeons to operate? – EllenPRocks via Twitter
Two things can send a hospital into lockdown mode, effectively cordoning off everyone into little groups: the theft of a newborn, and… a gunman with a tremendously itchy trigger finger (see above).

Can you say how many regular or recurring characters get shot in the first hour of the ‘Grey’s’ finale? And do you see any sign that the Owen-Cristina-Teddy triangle will finally be resolved? – Kelly
Well damn, one regular and one recurring take a bullet each within the first 10 minutes. Not long after that, I lost count of the shootings. As for the triangle from hell, it is steamrolling in a certain direction by the end of the first hour.

Is there any good Owen in the finale? – Lara
Army vet Dr. Hunt perhaps is a little too good. Brother at one critical juncture flaunts a bit of battlefield bravado, a decision that one of the women in his life isn’t too keen about.

What can you tell me about Mandy Moore’s role in the ‘Grey’s’ finale? – Indira1281
Moore guest-stars a patient suffering from this, that or the other thing; the exact ailment is somewhat immaterial. Her real purpose is to take part in one of the finale’s most electric, edge-of-your-seat sequences.

Did You Hear About The Grey's Anatomy Finale? [Updated]

Update: And here is a scan of the article. Thanks to our reader Ana for sending it in.

You may have a seen a post or two about it on our site before. As the finale approaches, even more details emerge. Here is another article about the finale, this one from the latest issue of TV Guide magazine:

Those of you with heart conditions may want to watch the Grey's Anatomy finale with a friend or at least with one finger ready to dial 9-1-1. "We really want the audience to be prepared for what they're gong to see, and maybe sent the children out of the room, "creator Shonda Rhimes warns of her shocking, heart-wrenching, two-hour close to Season 6. Insiders who have been treated to a sneak peek are comparing the capper to last year's whammy in which both George and Izzie were left at death's door. "I don't want anyone going into this thinking it's going to a happy light episode, "adds Rhimes. "Something horrible happens.".

At the center of all this drama, as always are Meredith and Cristina. "From the very beginning I've always said that Grey's is really a love story between these two best friends, and the finale really carries us back to that," says Rhimes. "They'll support each other though some pretty tough stuff."

The medical cases they're facing has personal stakes like they've never seen before "In most show, the boy ends up being the hero and saving the girl. We're definitely not doing that. We're getting to see Meredith and Cristina do some incredible things and rise in a pretty heroic way."

So, What Happens In The Grey's Anatomy Finale?

Read below if you want to know:

Question: All this vague “a crisis like no other” talk about the Grey’s Anatomy finale is killing me. And you don’t wanna be responsible for my death. Seattle Grace scoop, STAT. —Andy

                      Ausiello:
Would it qualify as putting you on life support if I got series creator Shonda Rhimes to tell you a bit about the two-hour season-ender? Let’s find out.

“The theme of the first hour is sanctuary, which sort of uses the idea that the hospital is our characters’ safest place and our safest place as viewers,” she says. “[Then we use] the hour to slowly turn that on its head [so] that by the end, the hospital is definitely kind of the least safe place in the world.” Yikes!

“The second hour,” she continues, “is about choices, and we get to watch our characters make big ones. Lexie chooses between Mark and Alex. Owen chooses between Teddy and Cristina. Bailey faces the hardest medical choice that a doctor has to make. And the other choice that’s being made is Callie and Arizona, and whether or not they’re going to be together or not. It IS going to come down to the baby thing.” You still with us, Andy? Hello? Bueller? Someone call 911!

Question: Please tell me we will actually get to see a Meredith story line on Grey’s Anatomy by the end of the season. —Lulu
Ausiello: Meredith is going to have a lot going on in the finale. Trust me.

Big Episode For Sandra Oh Coming Up

Latest on Grey's Anatomy from Kristin on E!:

Tessa in New Orleans: No one is going to die on Grey's Anatomy, right?
No deaths among the cast that I know of, but there is a death very soon that will affect Cristina and bring back some painful memories. It's a fantastic episode for Sandra Oh actually. Her character definitely has some strong material in the coming weeks that could win her that overdue Emmy.

Drew: Thanks for all the juicy Grey's couples scoop! Who is it that drops the M (marriage) bomb?
The marriage-related word that is dropped is actually an H-bomb: "Husband." And that's all I can say!

Pete in Ipswich, Mass.: Did Kevin McKidd say anything about the season finale?
I asked KMK if it's true that what happens is "unlike anything Seattle Grace has seen before" (per ABC), and he said, "Whatever it is that happens, Owen has a take on it that is interesting, connected and linked to his past life. In the finale, he's busy for a lot of it, but it comes up to speed quickly, and he makes some more snap decisions than other people are able to." Clearly, whatever goes down is big enough that he doesn't want to give much away. Big? On a Grey's finale? I know, bonkers!

                      And We're None The Wiser...

Grey's Anatomy. Season finale. Again. Ausiello's take.

Question: That Grey’s Anatomy teaser you posted has me worried that there will be multiple deaths in the supposedly game-changing season finale. Can you please put my mind at ease?

Ausiello: I can’t. But I think Shonda Rhimes can. “The events of the finale itself change the game,” she says. “Whether anyone lives or anyone dies is not really necessarily the point of it.” Feel better? No? I gots nothin’ else.

                      Huh?

                      Same, same but different.

What do you guys know about the Grey's Anatomy season finale?

ADAM: Here's what we know: The finale features a multi-car pileup that floods Seattle Grace with victims. Meanwhile, one of hospital's doctors will also have to contend with a deadly fire in her home.

"Fans should brace themselves. That's the only way to put it: Brace yourself," creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes tells us. "We're going to take you on a ride for the last two hours of the season, and when the ride is over, none of our characters is going to be the same. It's very different in comparison to the other finales."

Even More Details About The Grey's Anatomy Finale

From this weeks issue of TV Guide Magazine:

The two-hour finale will find us "holding our breaths", says creator Shonda Rhimes. "When the two hours are over, you can exhale." In other words: no big cliff-hanger!

But Mandy Moore plays the special guest on a gurney. "She's a happily married character who has had one surgery and is waiting to have her next."

Leading up to the closer, Rhimes adds, "Bailey will get laid, Mark makes a play to get Lexie back, Meredith comes between Cristina and Owen and Derek throws a cocktail party". Work-wise, Meredith and Cristina will come into their owns as surgeons.

"Everything takes a left turn so that when we see them next season, nothing-including the hospital - will be the same."

"All the rules as to who they are and where they stand in their relationships are thrown out the window" says creator Shonda Rhomes of the finale.
