Sandra Oh Talks Thorne And Her Summer In London

The Thorne-series is just about to premiere in the UK, and here is a great new interview with Sandra Oh done in London this summer, where she talks about her role in the series as English copper Sarah Chen, her co-stars and working in London:

The cast of Thorne
Iit’s interesting that during your hiatus this was the vehicle you chose...

“I usually don’t do things during my hiatus [from Grey’s Anatomy], but I wasn’t so devastatingly exhausted and I felt much more energised so I thought this was the right piece for me. One of the most practical things about it was that I could actually fit it in, but mostly it had to do with it being completely new and challenging, and actually slightly frightening in having a very, very different character to play. The challenge of doing something in London and the fact that the cast included David, Eddie and Aidan thrilled me.”

What was it like working on a British production for the first time?

“I had just finished shooting the sixth season finale of Grey’s and flew right over afterwards, so it was terrifying, actually. The first day of work was the hardest first day I’ve ever had in my career; I had mental breakdown after mental breakdown. My dialect coach, Jill McCulloch, saved my life, she really did - I got there on a Monday afternoon and then on Tuesday I had a three-hour session with her when I realised that I was in way over my head! I’ve never experienced that [feeling] before where you’re just barrelling towards failure and humiliation.

"The next day I had to be picked up at six and was in every single scene shooting that day. I was crying all the time, but I was very fortunate that Kevin McKidd [Oh’s Grey’s Anatomy co-star] was in London as well so I called him every day, bawling my eyes out. (laughs)

“But then the experience of shooting with the crew - which was half English and half French - and the amazing cast, made up for so much. I ended up feeling more comfortable about half-way through, and I never stopped talking in the [British] accent.”

The role seems a bit of a departure for you…

“I would say the first things I was ever known for in Canada were quite similar to this; an unhinged woman who abuses drugs. It actually took me back to those experiences. But based on the fact that I’ve been working on the same character for six seasons, yes it was very different. And, I tell you, this isn’t funny. Scaredy Cat is not funny. Grey’s has a balance of drama and comedy, so you can have some levity, not only to give your character an extra dimension, but also for your own sanity. But this character in Scaredy Cat, Sarah Chen - who I was just so pleased to play - she is definitely the most unhinged character in this show.

“She’s a cop with a serious coke addiction and appears calm and unflappable but she’s actually falling apart. So you turn up on set and your persona of someone who’s capable and might actually be good at her job all has to go away - that actually felt great.”
What were your highlight scenes?

“Working with Tom Brooke, whoa! That dude is just spectacular. I think Tom and I had a really great energy and chemistry. There are a couple of integral scenes that we had to hit correctly, otherwise, for me, it felt that nothing would make sense: [Sarah and Palmer’s] connecting scene when they’re really two peas in a pod and where Sarah learns that the person she connects to the most deeply is actually the killer. I think that frightens her and she needs to cover it with her addiction, but sometimes you can’t choose who you connect with.”

How is it working with Brits?

“David was a tremendous support to me, I would look at him with terror in my eyes and he would say, “You’ll be fine”. David’s done it; he’s done plenty of American accents. Aidan obviously has the accent in The Wire and I’m sure Eddie’s done American too. It was just so thrilling acting with them, anywhere near them. The calibre of talent on this piece was so high that in one respect I was working hard, but on the other hand, all I’m doing is looking at David’s face. Then the acting part comes much more easily.

“I was completely in love with the cast and crew, and London. The experience was thrilling and the challenge was so great, it was exhausting.“

Will you take your summers on the beach in future?

“Let me tell you straight up, I have got to come back to London. I met a lot of fantastic people and made such great friends, when I was leaving I was telling everyone, shamelessly: “You’ve got to get me a job here. I don’t care what it is; I will come here for a few plays and be here for a year or two.””

Meredith Grey Approves

Sandra Oh's co-stars Ellen Pompeo and Kevin McKidd talk about Cristina Yang in a yet another new article by TV Guide:

sandra oh, ellen pompeo and kevin mckidd

In turn, Derek will provide support in the marital department. "Owen comes to Derek for advice," McKidd says. "Even though he's married to Cristina (Sandra Oh) now, he still doesn't quite understand her a lot of the time, so Owen and Derek seem to end up connecting on that subject."

One good thing to come out of the traumatic events of the finale is that Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) will respect Owen in a different way. "Cristina has expressed to her that there needs to be a 'me and Owen,'" Pompeo says. "So I think Meredith knows that Cristina really does need that."

"You'd expect Meredith to be very much against this pairing, but [the finale] changed her perspective on a lot of things," McKidd adds. "She basically questioned Owen's intentions in Season 6, and in that moment in the O.R. [in the finale], it suddenly made her realize the situation and how Owen really feels."

"Meredith very much becomes an advocate for Owen being the right guy for Cristina," he continues. "She realizes they're meant for each other and that's the first time we've seen that."

Grey's Anatomy: 7.01 'With You I'm Born Again' - The End

Some people like to read the end of a book first. If you're not one of them, then you may not want to watch this clip from tonight's episode of Grey's Anatomy, because unlike the other sneak peeks, it is that spoilery.

Once Upon A Time Cristina And Owen Almost Had A Baby...

Kevin McKidd reveals it all in a interview with the French Allocine:

You have arrived in season 5. Was it easy for you to integrate to the cast?
Kevin McKidd:
I was very lucky. Everybody welcomed me warmly, including Sandra Oh, who helped me to integrate myself and left me time to get my bearings. She is a very generous girl. Patrick Dempsey has also been strong. We knew since we had already shot a movie together a few months earlier (Made of Honour). It was pretty scary at first because I had never been part of a series as popular. It took me time to adapt but all went well.

Shonda Rhimes series are very unique. How would you define her style?
Kevin McKidd :
She writes with her guts. I should certainly not say it but the episode has long since passed ... In the finale of season 5, it was expected that Cristina gets pregnant. It was written. We would then have raised the child in season 6. And Shonda Rhimes came to us and saying she had a dream and a little voice told him that this was not the right time. Then she changed at the last moment. That's her style: she believes in her characters, they live in his head, they love them deeply. And then she writes very well. Especially the dialogues. I spot immediately in a script she wrote.

Grey's Anatomy: 7.01 'With You I'm Born Again' - Even More Sneak Peeks

Sneak peek:

Original Video - More videos at TinyPic

CTV promo:

Grey's Anatomy: Cristina And Derek Sitting In A Tree...

Kidding, kidding. That would be too freaky. But they are up to something [not freaky].

Grey's boss Shonda Rhimes was interviewed by TV Guide in the latest issue of the magazine [with Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey on the cover] and she talked about Cristina and Owen's new living arrangement, the new special bond between Cristina and Derek, and the potential departure of the original characters.

It's all very interesting, but slightly spoilerish, so read below the pics if you want to know:

Cristina and Owen: Owen and Cristina tied the knot at Mer's, but they're not moving in with the rest of the Seattle Grace Mercy West crew. They'll be living in a cool converted firehouse.

Cristina and McDreamy: Frumpy attire should be the least of Meredith's concerns this season. Feeling she may pass on the genes of her Alzheimer's-stricken mother, not to mention alcoholic father, she tells Derek he'll be wind up one day babysitting "a drooling 80-year old wie with a drooling 50-year-old child". This drives Derek to team with Cristina (Sandra Oh) to find a cure for the disease.

"Sandra and I are working together in a way we haven't seen before," says Dempsey. "We're very intertwined. The shooting tragedy affected Cristina on a very deep level, so she and I have an experience together no one else shares."

The originals: Given the potential of losing her leading couple [Meredith and Derek], Rhimes has no choice but to create new character to fill voids left by departing favorites. "I'm looking at the show as heading into a future where many of the originals may stay and some of them may not," Rhimes says. "My feeling is, let's spend time telling some amazing stories about Derek, Meredith and Cristina while we have them. I only want our originals staying as long as there are compelling stories to tell for them."

Though word is Oh may also bolt when her contract ends, the other remaining originals - Justin Chambers, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr all seem content to go the distance.

Grey's Anatomy: 7.01 'With You I'm Born Again' - Another sneak peek

A turn of events at Cristina and Owen's wedding day:

'Grey's Anatomy Is Far From Finished!'

This brand new interview with Sandra Oh and co-star James Pickens Jr was featured in this week's issue of the French magazine Ciné Télé Revue where they talked about Grey's Anatomy and their characters, so check out what Sandra had to say below:

How would you describe the progression of the character of Cristina since the debut of "Grey's Anatomy"?
Sandra Oh: What I like most, it was becoming more compassionate. It must be evidence of growing maturity. (Laughter.) It's rare to see a change so fundamental elements of the personality of people and I hope it will last, because we should not kid ourselves, she is still as competitive and ambitious on many levels!

What do you think of the decisions taken by your characters?
SO: Living in the skin of a character is part of your job as an actor. You give them a soul and their actions really affect you. So after having played this role for six years, I have become extremely territorial!

Compared to other series, the filming of Grey's Anatomy takes a long time. What impact does it have on your privacy?
SO: It is very complicated. I leave it to you, James.

James Pickens: I guess that's the nature of any medical series, and personally I do not mind too much. We do not look long hours for pleasure, there's a reason to work hard. So I like it or not ... I prefer to get involved and inject a substance that effort in the personality of Dr. Webber.

We often hear of good camaraderie on set. Honestly, is there not also negatives?
J.P: There are no downsides, my dear. With the current economic climate, having a full time job for five years in this business is a miracle. We're certainly not going to complain!

SO: Good dramas are being disappearance, it is cheaper to produce reality TV show.

Have you ever been hospitalized since the beginning of the series?
SO: I got sick during my holidays in St. Tropez last year and I went to the emergency that took care of me quickly. I could not believe how everything seemed familiar: it was exactly as in the series! I was on morphine and my french seemed so good. (Laughter.) I felt like I followed everything the doctor said and to understand better the tests he passed me. Even if, ultimately, I'm still not sure what I suffered! (Laughter)

What did the staff when he saw you leave?
SO: I feel that playing in Grey's Anatomy assures a good treatment in hospitals, and this life! In fifteen years, there will always one who will remember and take good care me. (Laughter.)
How do you imagine the end of Grey's?SO: What do you mean by "end"? We are far from finished! (Laughter.)

JP: If one day it stops, I can assure you it will be drama.

Do you see yourself holding five years as "ER"?
SO: If the writers find a structure that allows a structure that allows to rotate the medical team as was done in "ER" with Noah Wyle year principal axis, there are ways that we pass the milestone of at least seven years.

An Amazing Co-Star

Kevin McKidd recently won an award for his portrayal of Owen Hunt and the PTSD-story line on Grey's Anatomy. Sandra Oh was one of the people he kindly mentioned in his speech - which got a round of applause from the audience - and here's what he said:

Kevin McKidd: "I want to thank Sandra Oh for being an amazing co-star. She's supported this story the whole way along. She's been so passionate about this relationship."

And then the triangle happened...

Rabbit Hole: Reviews And Release Date

The buzz for Rabbit Hole, which screened at TIFF a few days ago, has been so good that Variety reports today that Lionsgate has picked up the movie and will be releasing it in the US in December, just in time for awards season.

The reviews have overall been great with lots of Oscar buzz for Nicole Kidman. We can't possibly post them all, so here are some of the reviews where Sandra Oh and her character is mentioned. To read the full review, go to the source.

  • Meanwhile, Howie has his own secret sharer, a woman (Sandra Oh) from group, who has become something of a long-term griever. You realize this couple is gradually coming apart by creating separate lives. - The Hollywood Reporter
  • Not everything in Rabbit Hole avoids cliche-- the one screaming and crying scene between Becca and Howie feels a little forced, and Howie's budding friendship with a fellow support group member (Sandra Oh) isn't sketched out enough to provide more than rote "will they or won't they?" tension. And while Lindsay-Abaire's writing can put too fine a point on things in some scenes, it frequently takes your breath away with its insight; playing Becca's mother, Dianne Wiest delivers a monologue about grief that is all the more stunning for how simply and succinctly she presents it.  - Cinema Blend
  • Adhering to realism when a melodramatic route would offer the easy solution, “Rabbit Hole” feels persistently credible even when things get complicated. Becca secretly finds solace in meetings with the disillusioned teen (Miles Teller) whose actions behind the wheel led to her son’s death. Howie, meanwhile, finds himself drawn into an ambiguous relationship with a fellow group therapy member (Sandra Oh). Comprising the bulk of the story, these scenes allow the tightly assembled cast to act circles around each other and little else. - Indiewire
  • The connection Becca and Jason forge is much stronger than the one between her and Howie. They are certainly in couple’s crisis following the loss of their only child, but there is no evidence that there ever was any chemistry. Eckhart plays Howie as a high-energy extrovert, much like Slattery did in the play, but the former’s chiselled face begins to yank him out of the reality orbit. As an actor, he displays breakdown well, but it is difficult to get beyond him and into the character. (Sandra Oh is hilarious as another parent in their group therapy.)  -  Screen Daily
  • Director John Cameron Mitchell (who made his name writing, directing and starring in "Hedwig and the Angry Inch") might seem like an odd choice for the material, but he shares Lindsay-Abaire's talent for using humor to better explore and understand complicated emotions. The actors—including Dianne Wiest and Tammy Blanchard as Kidman's mother and sister, Sandra Oh as a fellow member of group counseling and Miles Teller as the high school student responsible for the accident—respond with strong naturalistic performances. - St. Louis Metromix
  • The film is a definite slow burn, and one that focused on the life of a husband and wife who had recently lost their young son.  They deal with their issues in different ways as Nicole Kidman’s character attempts to connect with the driver of the car that killed their child, and Aaron Eckhardt’s character befriends a fellow parent of a deceased child played by Sandra Oh. - The Tracking Board
  • Their one overt attempt to deal with grief together, a group for bereaved parents, is an unqualified failure, as Becca can’t abide the group members who seek solace through religious faith and callously calls out one couple about it.  Their very attractive suburban home seems to simultaneously hold the pair together and apart, and as much as Howie wants to vocalise his grief and physically reconnect with Becca, she is physically and emotionally withdrawn. Inevitably, this divide leads them to forge connections with others; Howie with a mother from the support group (Sandra Oh), and Becca with the boy who hit their son with his car (excellent newcomer Miles Teller). - HeyUGuys
  • There's a wonderful scene in which a Kidman disses a group-therapy couple who've also lost a child. They're sharing the notion that God has a plan and He needed their child so he could have an extra angel in heaven, blah blah, and Kidman just shoots that shit down like Sgt. York. Perfect. Sandra Oh gives a fine performance (her best since Sideways) also as a divorcee whom Eckhardt develops a certain interest in. - Hollywood Elsewhere
  • Perhaps looking for closure and unbeknownst to her husband, Kidman befriends the young man whose car hit her son after he ran aimlessly after their dog into the road (a relatively unknown, but startling Miles Teller). Meanwhile, Howie has found a kindred spirt in another parent experiencing loss in a local support group played by Sandra Oh (finally stepping out again from the "Grey's Anatomy" crush), but is holding in an angry raging about just how to move forward with his life.  - HitFix
  • Other key roles are played by Miles Teller, as a high-school student who was driving the car responsible for the child's death, and Sandra Oh as a newly-separated fellow grief victim who reaches out to Eckhart. - NY Post
  • Based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning play, this film tells the story of a couple trying to rebuild/survive after the death of their young son. Given its pedigree (it stars Nicole Kidman, Aaron Eckhart, Dianne Wiest and Sandra Oh), I knew that this was likely to be good… but my surprise was only in HOW good it is. The film features excellent performances, a fantastic script, and a great balance of real-world humour & heart-wrenching sadness.  - Lectrify
    • Howie continues to attend Group Therapy alone and befriends another mourning mother played by the brilliant Sandra Oh. With tensions mounting between Howie and Beckie, we find Howie further drawn to Oh's character. In addition to Howie engaging in an emotional affair with someone else, Becca seeks resolve secretly with the boy who killed her daughter accidentally, Jason (Miles Teller). It is in him and not Therapy that she is able to get her own sense of closure and forgiveness. - Mr. Will-W.
    • "Rabbit Hole" — This heavy drama has Oscar whispers all over it, thanks in large part to powerhouse leads Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart as an anguished couple reeling from the death of their four-year-old son. Textured performances from Dianne Wiest and Canada's Sandra Oh add sorrow-tinged comic relief to this moving adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by David Lindsay-Abaire. (Release date TBA) - Brandon Sun
    • At Howie’s request, the Corbetts make a weekly appearance at a group session for parents mourning their lost children. At the meeting, they meet Gaby and Rick (Sandra Oh and Jon Tenney). They’re the veterans of the group service: they’ve been attending the therapy for eight years.

While the Corbetts’ depression is often contagious, Rabbit Hole isn’t nearly as bleak a film as one would expect. The film is often amusing: particularly in the scenes with Oh’s serial-griever and Wiest’s tee-totalling grandma, Rabbit Hole finds a fine balance between hope and despair (to paraphrase Rohinton Mistry). The humour not only manages to diffuse the awkwardness of the situation, but it adds a sense of optimism to the Corbetts’ situation as well. - Cinemographer
