Sandra Oh: 10 Things You Don't Know About Women

This was written by Sandra Oh for Esquire magazine:

1. If you want to date an Asian sister, do not do the following:
(a) Tell me about your trip to Asia and how you taught English there.
(b)Tell me how much you just looove Chinese food.
(c) Practice your Japanese on me. I'm Korean.

2. When we're fighting about the toothpaste cap, we're not really fighting about the toothpaste cap. We're fighting about that thing that happened three or four months ago at what's-his-face's house when you neglected that major issue we have — which, by the way, is fundamental.

3. When we have been pleasured and you haven't yet (and it's your turn), no matter what we say, make it quick.

4. We have an infinite vocabulary for colors. Fuchsia is not pink, nor is it red. Khaki is not green, nor is it brown. There is more than blue and green on the color wheel.

5. If it's over, just tell us. If you're sitting around afraid of hurting us, it only makes the relationship so unbearable that we have to break up with you. We're actually stronger than you think, so even though we may cry more than you do, we're way more resilient.

6. When you ask us if we're angry and we say we're fine, we're lying.

7. This one I can't tell you.

8. It doesn't matter how big the bauble, how fabu the restaurant — the time you spent on that pencil drawing of our eye or that haiku written on the vintage hotel stationery you found in Omaha is what truly steals our hearts.

9. You know that coworker of yours with the huge boobs whom you've fantasized us having a threesome with? Ask her.

10. So, you want to know the surefire way to get laid? Start by cleaning the house.

Even More "Good Medicine"

The stars of TV's "Grey's Anatomy" and "Private Practice" are coming to the rescue of writers and crew knocked for a loop by the writers strike.

Almost all the stars of the two popular ABC series will gather Friday for "Good Medicine," a night of music and humor to raise money for the Solidarity Fund, which was organized by the Writers Guild of America to help members of film and TV productions put out of work by the strike, which finally ended two weeks ago.

Friday's "Good Medicine" concert at UCLA's Royce Hall will bring together a long list of familiar TV faces from both "Grey's" and its spinoff "Private Practice," including Ellen Pompeo, Katherine Heigl, Audra McDonald, Sandra Oh, T.R. Knight, Amy Brenneman, Tim Daly and a whole lot more.

"Everyone wanted to be involved," said the twice Emmy-nominated Oh, best-known as Dr. Christina Yang on "Grey's Anatomy," and an actress in the Academy Award-winning films "Sideways" and "The Red Violin."

Oh said those attending Friday can expect a segment in which cast members read some of the best fan writing about the shows taken from Web sites devoted to the two medical dramas. There will also be humorous explanations of behind-the-scenes jobs such as "best boy" and "key grip."

Oh added, "I'm really looking forward to hearing some of my fellow cast members sing."

The WGA's Solidarity Fund was created during the strike, which lasted more than 100 days and ended just in time for last weekend's Oscars. Most networks, now in the midst of accelerated production schedules, are bringing shows back in April.

The Emmy and Golden Globe-winning "Grey's Anatomy" debuted on ABC as a midseason replacement in 2005, immediately following "Desperate Housewives." The series revolves around Dr. Meredith Grey (Pompeo), who began the show as a surgical intern at Seattle Grace Hospital. The spinoff, "Private Practice," starring Kate Walsh as Dr. Addison Montgomery, debuted last winter.

Oh, who spent some time in January on the picket line to show solidarity for the "Grey's" staff, said she noticed the strikers were getting "really nervous" as the work stoppage wore on.

"I heard things like, 'I have enough saved to get by for one more month,' " she recalled. "There was this underlying worry. People were starting to think it could go on for months and months."

Oh used her time off to simply "recharge" after "a hectic four seasons."

She added, "Now that everybody's recharged, we're going to get some really good stuff on the show this year. We have well-rested writers with a burst of creativity. I think we're all excited to see what's going to happen."

Sandra Oh To Host The Genie Awards

Actress Sandra Oh is coming back to Canada next weekend to host the Genie Awards, the annual celebration of the year's top Canadian films, organizers announced Monday evening.

Though perhaps most well-known for her Golden Globe-winning turn as an ambitious young surgeon on hit TV medical drama Grey's Anatomy, Oh has also maintained strong links to the independent and Canadian film communities.

Earlier this year, the Nepean, Ont.-born, Ottawa-raised Oh served as a juror for the dramatic competition grand jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival.

Oh is also a former best actress Genie-winner for her roles in Don McKellar's Last Night and Mina Shum's Double Happiness. Her credits range from the Oscar contender Sideways to the HBO comedy Arliss to early work in Canadian productions like CBC's The Diary of Evelyn Lau.

In December, the Toronto branch of the group Women in Film and Television presented Oh with the international achivement honour at its 2007 Crystal Awards. She recently returned to filming Grey's Anatomy after the end of the recent U.S. screenwriters strike — during which she was a prominent face on the picket lines supporting her writer colleagues.

With 12 nominations each, David Cronenberg's Russian mafia thriller Eastern Promises and the Rwandan genocide drama Shake Hands with the Devil are the lead nominees going into the 28th annual Genie Awards.

The ceremony will be held in Toronto on March 3.

Ausiello Exclusive: Cristina Yang Gets No Love

It's a sad day for those of us who were looking forward to some Pacey and Cristina lovin' on Grey's Anatomy. Michael Ausiello from TV Guide reports:

Jackson's Grey's Stint Fades to Black

Joshua Jackson by Tony Barson/ WireImage.com, Sandra Oh by Bob D'Amico/ABCIt appears Joshua Jackson's Grey's Anatomy gig has ended before it began. And once again, the writers' strike is to blame.

To quickly recap, Grey's announced last fall that the ex-Dawson's Creeker would be joining the cast for a multi-episode arc as a doctor and, as I would later report, a love interest for Cristina. Unfortunately, just weeks before he was scheduled to shoot his first episode, the writers went on strike and Jackson's stint, just like the TV biz itself, was put on hold.

Cut to present day: The strike is over, Grey's is headed back into production, and Jackson is — yep, you guessed it — no longer available. During the work stoppage, J.J. Abrams hand-picked the actor to headline his new X-Files-esque Fox series Fringe, which is currently in production in Toronto (and will be through mid-March). Although an attempt was made to make the scheduling work, ultimately the logistics proved too daunting.

Now Grey's is forced to either recast the role or scrap it entirely. An ABC spokesperson declined to comment, but a Seattle Grace insider says a final decision will likely be made in the coming days.

Personally, I'm bummed we won't get to see Pacey and Cristina mix it up. I have a thing for unlikely romantic pairings, and this one was about as unlikely as they come. Feel free to agree or disagree with me in the comments section below. And while you're at it, throw out some names of potential replacements — should Grey's opt to go the recast route. Hey, I hear James Van Der Beek's free!

Grey's News and 'Good Medicine'

Shonda Rhimes, the creator/writer of Grey's Anatomy writes on the official blog:

My point is, it’s going to take a while to get from my typing fingers to your TV screen. Our first new episode will air at the end of April.

What will you do until then to get your Grey’s on? If only you could see the actors in person. If only you could go see them on stage, in person, talking and laughing and yes, SINGING for charity…

YOU CAN!!!

For one night only, the casts of Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice are coming together for a live performance! An unforgettable evening of laughter and song to benefit crew members who were affected by the strike.

Because while the strike is over, it will be months before many crew members are back to work. Millions of dollars in income were lost. Many crew members are suffering. And we want to do anything we can to help out.

So:

FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY, February 29, 2008 at UCLA’s Royce Hall in Los Angeles, CA we are presenting GOOD MEDICINE. A little singing, a little funny, a lot of raising money.

Come on out and join the casts of Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. See TR KNIGHT SING! Hear Tony Winners Audra MacDonald and Sara Ramirez! See Katie and Kate! See Ellen and Sandra! SEE THEM ALL! CAUSE THEY WANNA SEE YOU! And help raise some money to help others!

Tickets are $85. You can buy them on Ticketmaster.com or call the UCLA Central Ticket Office at 310-825-2101. Tickets are going to go fast and you don’t want to miss this one time event.

I hope to see you there! I’ll be the one in the too-sparkly dress (I love sparkly to the point of tacky), looking pleased and proud of my kickass casts as they work to entertain you….

GREY'S ANATOMY

What We're Hearing: Grey's will go back into production this season and is expected to produce a handful of new episodes to air in April and May. And yes, Josh Jackson is expected to finally fulfill his guest-spot duties as Cristina's love interest. So, yes, there is a god.

Cristina Yang And Pacey Witter Sitting In A Tree...

Spoilers included.

Cristina Yang finally gets a new storyline on Grey's and it's a good one. From TV Guide's Ask Ausiello weekly column:

Question: You mentioned that Joshua Jackson's three-episode Grey's Anatomy arc was delayed indefinitely because of the writers' strike. However, there's a new Grey's airing this Thursday. Will he be in that episode? — Meagan

Ausiello: No, hence the "delayed indefinitely" thing. The good news is that I hear Shonda Rhimes has every intention of shoe-horning Pacey into Seattle Grace (and Cristina's bed) the second the strike is over.

And the Ausiello Vodcast:

Grey's finally gives Cristina a storyline. Grey's Anatomy may have run out of original episodes last Thursday but luckily the spoilers don't end there. No siree. According to my Grey's mole, the next episode, which was in the process of being written when the strike began, will thrust Cristina into 2 major storylines. One of them I already told you about a romance between her and Joshua Jackson's doctor character. The other I didn't and that's because I just found out myself. I'm hearing that Dr. Yang will be the one to help Meredith get over her split with Derek. A breakup that, my mole insists, will stick for awhile, at least until the conclusion of the Derek/Rose arc.

Nuvo: The Cover

Here's a sneak peek of Sandra on the cover of Nuvo magazine:

And the official pressrelease:

Sandra Oh is the Cover Story for NUVO’s Spring 2008 Issue
Grey’s Anatomy star featured wearing traditional Korean dresses

Canadian actor Sandra Oh is the cover story for the Spring 2008 issue of NUVO magazine. The issue, on newsstands February 25, features an exclusive photo shoot with Oh wearing hanbok dress, a type of traditional Korean clothing. In an interview with NUVO, Oh discusses her life and experiences from growing up in Ottawa to signing on to one of television’s hottest shows.

Oh was photographed by Sheryl Nields at an abandoned Los Angeles warehouse. The location was chosen to create a dynamic contrast with the colourful hanbok pieces designed by dressmaker Kim Mehee Shin. The combination of the modest setting and the intricately designed dresses created a series of stunning photos.

“Only someone with a strong personality and individuality could pull this off–someone like Sandra Oh,” says NUVO Art Director Sandra Zarkovic. “Her free-spirited demeanour was apparent in the photos throughout.” NUVO will publish two covers for the upcoming Spring issue.

Along with her role as Dr. Cristina Yang on Grey’s Anatomy (for which she has won a Golden Globe and a Screen Actor’s Guild Award), Oh is recognized for her roles in the hit HBO series Arli$$ and the critically acclaimed film Sideways. Her resumé boasts dozens of television, film and stage appearances.

In its 10th year of publication, NUVO magazine is a Canadian lifestyle publication that features style, celebrity and culture. NUVO is the audited leader in the Canadian media marketplace, and has over 20 publishing and editorial awards to date. NUVO is available on newsstands at Chapters and Indigo locations across Canada, and by subscription. For more information, please visit www.nuvomagazine.com.

Sundance Film Festival 2008: The Gossip 2

Tarantino almost missed a party thrown in his honour

New York, Jan 30: Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino was on the verge of missing a party thrown in his honour at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah when his car broke down on the way to the venue.

The 'Pulp Fiction' director was heading to the Ray Ban Visionary Awards when he got stuck on the side of a winding mountain road along with 'Grey's Anatomy' star Sandra Oh, reports the New York Post.

However, the situation was tackled when Tarantino's assistant went to the nearby Yarrow Hotel and found an eager fan who offered to drive the pair to the ceremony.

The group arrived just in time to walk the red carpet and rushed inside.

Sundance Film Festival 2008: The Gossip

"At a Thursday screening of 'Choke' (an award winner) the row in front of us was reserved. In walks Quentin Tarantino and Marcia Gay Harden, both judges in the Dramatic competition at the Festival. Then comes Sandra Oh of 'Grey's Anatomy,' and Diego Luna, also judges. Tarantino wouldn't pose for a picture but I took it anyway. Oh refused a pic, too. They all looked like they just rolled out of bed.

"Tarantino was loud during the film (drawing attention to himself maybe?) and Oh had her hair pinned up and the spikes were sticking up right in my view of the screen. She had her arm around Luna. Hmmmm.
