Sandra Oh On Her Grey's Exit [Update]

Sandra Oh in a recent interview with E! Online about her announcement to leave Grey's Anatomy at the end of the season:

UPDATE: Video interview with Sandra and Kevin added.

"I remember when I announced it to my cast, it was the 200th episode and after our read-through—which was fantastic, I stood up and told everyone," Oh reveals to us exclusively during an event celebrating the series' milestone. "I did not want anyone to know through a press release or something like that. I wanted to tell everyone personally. It was tough."

"I'm going through so much therapy, by the way, to get through this. I'm not joking!" she tells us. "Not only to make the decision, but to actually process it out. It's been very, very emotional."

Co-star Kevin McKidd on Sandra's departure:
"I was really bummed. I knew it was coming, I think, because Sandra and I spent so much time together the past five years," he says. "So I wasn't that surprised, but I'm just really sad about it."

Saying Goodbye To Cristina Yang

Sandra Oh announcing her departure from Grey's Anatomy at the end of season 10 was rather big news in the world of pop culture last week. Sandra Oh and Grey's Anatomy were a trending topic on Twitter for hours after the news broke, and the news has inspired a slate of articles like these:

SLATE: How Cristina Yang Changed Television
I want to take this occasion to celebrate Yang, one of TV’s most original and influential characters. Grey’s may be years removed from its buzzy, Emmy-winning start, but in Yang, the loveable, persnickety careerist, Rhimes and Oh have created a complex workaholic who has begat a whole generation of female protagonists, none quite as impressive as she is. - Read more

The Daily Beast: Pull the Plug on 'Grey's Anatomy'
A Grey’s Anatomy without Sandra Oh’s fan-favorite doc, Cristina Yang? Oh, my.
Without Cristina Yang, who’s going to call the bull? Who’s going to deliver witty one-liners? Who’s going to take a stand against the allure of the McMen? Most importantly, who’s going to inhale candy and hot dogs and do so elegantly? The answer is no one. - Read more

Pajiba: Saying Goodbye to Cristina Yang, One of the Best B*tchfaces on Television

But I think that any complex, well-acted character deserves attention and Sandra Oh has done a fantastic job bringing Cristina Yang to life for ten years. I will miss the character, and will probably stop watching the show once she’s gone. The relationship between her and Meredith has been the backbone of the series since the first episode, and I don’t see how they can keep it going if she leaves.
Goodbye, Dr.Yang, you were too good for the show you were in and I hope there are better things waiting for you in your future. That goes double for Sandra Oh. - Read more

Sandra Oh: Don't Off Cristina Yang!

Sandra Oh has talked to EW about her upcoming final season on Grey's Anatomy, and here is an excerpt from the interview:

On making the announcement to leave early on
“It’s really difficult to write television when you don’t know an endpoint,” she tells EW, explaining why she thought it was important to give the show’s writers time to plan for her departure. “For the writers…to know there are multiple episodes to write a story — to write a conclusion — is a great gift. It’s also a great gift to be able to play because I usually don’t know what’s going to happen to the character. For me, it can just infuse her with a richness that you can’t necessarily have not knowing that information.”

On Cristina and Owen

“They don’t want to be in the same place they have been. Where they are going, I just don’t know. It sort of breaks my heart to not be in the arms of Kevin McKidd now. But who knows? It’s a long season.”

On Cristina Yang, the modern woman

“I feel like Cristina — who does not represent a classic or traditional female character that we see on television — is really essential to the movement of where we are as women. A woman isn’t only defined by her career and a woman is not only defined by her role as a mother and a wife either,” she says. “It’s to try to see the person and the character as a whole individual. And I do like the differences between Cristina and Meredith because you get to see multiple facets of the choices that women can make.”

On how Cristina should go at the end

“I don’t know what they have planned. It can be anything,” she says. “She could, like — I mean, I don’t want them to off me. I know people have died on this show. They could send her to the moon. I have no idea.”

Shonda Rhimes: "Writing For Sandra Is One Of The Best Things That's Ever Happened To Me"

Here is an en excerpt from an extended interview with Grey's Anatomy boss Shonda Rhimes regarding Sandra's decision to leave the show at the end of the season:

Shonda Rhimes and Sandra Oh at the NAACP Image Awards in 2006.

The Hollywood Reporter: What was your reaction when you heard Sandra Oh would not be returning? Were you surprised?

Shonda Rhimes: I know Sandra pretty well. It was one of those things where I so wished it wasn't true for many reasons. For me, as a human being, I love spending time with Sandra, and as a writer, writing for Sandra is one of the best things that's ever happened to me. I would hope that it wouldn't be happening -- but I also know Sandra, and I know that it's time for her to have new challenges. I get to have new challenges all the time because I get to create other shows, but she doesn't get to do that, so I fully understood it.

THR: How soon in the season will Cristina's exit be addressed? Will it be a season-long story?

Rhimes: It won't be until the end of the season. The minute Sandra and I started talking about this, we have a story that we want to tell and we want to tell it really well, and that story isn't about her leaving the show as much as it is Cristina Yang's growth as a person and as a surgeon. Cristina Yang is not going to magically decide she wants babies, no.

THR: Do you know how Cristina's story ends? Will it be a happy or sad one?

Rhimes: I know how it ends, but I'm not going to say anything else.

THR: Is there a way that Cristina and Owen can end up together despite Sandra leaving and Kevin McKidd continuing on with the show?

Rhimes: No comment.

Kevin McKidd On Sandra Oh's Departure From Grey's Anatomy

Extended interview with Sandra Oh's costar, the always kind Kevin McKidd, on Sandra's departure from Grey's Anatomy later this upcoming season:

Kevin McKidd and Sandra Oh on the Grey's set.
The Hollywood Reporter: Were you surprised to hear that Sandra Oh was leaving?

Kevin McKidd: Sandra and I have been friends for as long as we've worked together, so I had a feeling it might be coming and that it was the right time for her. Selfishly, I was hoping and wishing she might make a different choice and decide to stay because I love working with her. I've had the great fortune and luck to be her acting partner and for her to be my acting partner for the last half a decade. It wasn't a surprise; I was aware of where she's at but was wishing and hoping that despite all that she might stick around so I might get to still act with her. It wasn't a surprise, but I was still sad when she told me.

THR: What was your conversation with Sandra like when she told you?

McKidd: It wasn't a long conversation; I just got really sad. I'm really happy for her, too, because it's the right thing for her right now, too, to take that new step forward in her life and career. She's an amazing talent. She has so many parts that she needs to play and work she needs to tackle, so it's obviously the right time for her. I'm happy for her, but I'm sad for me. (Laughs.)
