Randomness

Actress Brooke Smith (left) has joined Grey's Anatomy as series regular Dr. Erica Hahn. She mentions Sandra in a couple of interviews.

1.

Since you're sticking around, I guess it's safe to assume that they're going to delve a little more into Dr. Hahn's background… maybe give her a love interest?

Smith: I think so. Honestly, as of now, there's only a little hinting. I'm getting some suggestions….

Like what?
Smith: There might be a certain man there who's interested in me. But I don't know what Dr. Hahn will think of that. It's really interesting.

I can see Dr. Hahn hitting it off with Cristina.
Smith: Secretly, we pushed for that. You know, Sandra [Oh] and I played lovers in [the off-Broadway play] Stop Kiss.

You know, there were rumors a while back that Cristina might be bisexual….
Smith: I know. I heard those rumors.

Then it's destined to happen!
Smith: That's what I think. But I don't know….

2.

BROOKE SMITH, a former guest star on "Grey's Anatomy" as Dr. Erica Hahn, the heart surgeon character who used to taunt Dr. Burke (Isaiah Washington), has now joined the libidinal surgical fray full time.

I'm assuming that it actually turns out that everyone is nice with some exceptions.
Smith: I haven't met anyone who's not nice there. Truthfully! And I've known some of those people before. I did a movie with Patrick [Dempsey], and I did a play with Sandra [Oh] in New York called "Stop Kiss." We were lovers!

So you know each other quite well!
Smith: We do! When I first got to "Grey's," she told the producers I was a good kisser. Ooh, very controversial. And I did a "Law & Order" a million years ago with Ellen [Pompeo]. And T.R. [Knight]! I met T.R. at the O'Neill Theater Festival. Very highbrow. What can I say?

Grey's Anatomy star and homegrown talent Sandra Oh on Hollywood, beauty and her career.

By Katrina Onstad

On playing Dr. Cristina Yang...
Sometimes I feel myself creep into the character a little too much these days. When you're relaxed, when you're having fun and playing her day after day after day, the actor will eventually fold into the character a little bit, and vice versa. But I'm basically a good humoured person and she is not!

On the spiritual side of acting...
I think I'm very lucky, very greatly blessed because literally, every single thing I've done since a young age has led me to this moment. I don't think I'm a damaged person. Acting is about that need for connection, the universal deep flowing river that gives you a sense of purpose, tells you why you do what you want to do. When I'm connected to that, I'm connected to you.

On being Canadian in Hollywood...
That's my secret power. I've been in LA a while now, almost 12 years, but I still only have my green card. Many people have asked me: Are you going to become a citizen? I can't, I can't. The secret power is that I can always go home. I don't want to give that up.

On the image of women in film...
I think we're moving to a place where you can see a more realistic loser type man on film, but their object of desire, the woman, is always...va va voom, like Knocked Up. It's reflective of how the men who are making films see themselves, and there has not been that movement for women. The image of woman has not shifted: it's rare for women to be flawed, and not unattainable or unrealistic. But again, I'm not the typical woman you see on television or in movies, so that's something. I would aspire to be part of that movement.

On her beauty...
That's a tough question for me, constantly challenging, deeply challenging. It's hard and I would never want to wish that I looked different because my looks have created exactly the spirit that I have, but it's just so fraught with doubt. I will say, though, that it's not the shell you're born into that's going to make the most impact, it is the spirit you're given that you have to work with. But they both effect each other, I know they do.

People: Sandra Oh and Alexander Payne's Divorce Finalized

The divorce between Sandra Oh and Sideways writer-director Alexander Payne was finalized Thursday, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE.

Although their marital status officially ended on Dec. 22, the former couple took more than two years to settle their finances, which is the last step in any divorce.

In March 2005, a spokeswoman confirmed to PEOPLE that Oh, 36, and Payne, 46, had "mutually decided to separate." Added the rep: "They have been together for five years and were married in [January] 2003. The couple will remain friends."

Oh filed for divorce the following month in Los Angeles Superior Court. According to her filing, she was seeking spousal support. In his divorce response, Payne sought to deny those payments.

It was the first marriage for both; they had no children together.

Sandra Oh to Support Comfort Women

By Park Si-soo

Korean-Canadian actress Sandra Oh is going to take a stand to raise international awareness about the comfort women, who were forced to engage in prostitution during World War II by the Japanese military.

The Hollywood star will participate in an international conference, which deals with the sensitive issue, running from Oct. 4 to 7 at the University of California in Los Angeles. This is the first international gathering of this kind in the U.S.

"She is expected to recite a poem calling for the swift settlement of the long-dragged problems of the sex slaves", said an official of the conference. "Many other movie stars, including Jane Fonda, a well-known actress and anti-war campaigner, will also attend the conference".

U.S. congressman Mike Honda, former comfort women and members of NGOs from 11 countries plan to be present at the meeting.

Having grown up in Canada, the actress had no idea about the bitter history of Korean comfort women but became aware of the problem after learning of the resolution proposed in July by Japanese-American congressman Mike Honda, which urges the Japanese government to acknowledge, apologize and accept their historical responsibility.

"There are still many students in the U.S. who don't know what brutal history we have gone through", said Lee Jong-hwa, a professor at the Loyola Marymount University in the U.S. "After compiling related information, we plan to make textbooks and documentaries".

Sandra Oh was born in Canada in 1971 and leapt to stardom after appearing in the smash-hit TV drama "Grey's Anatomy".

She won an award for the best supporting actress at the Golden Globe Awards in 2005.
