Isaiah Washington Still Watches Grey's Because Of Sandra Oh

Sandra Oh's former Grey's Anatomy co-star Isaiah Washington - who played Cristina's teacher and almost husband Dr. Preston Burke  - appeared on CNN Newsroom today where he discussed his new book and the big controversy that he was involved in on Grey's Anatomy a few years ago which lead to his dismissal.

In the interview he says that he has been invited back to the show since he left and he briefly mentions that still "peeks in" to watch Grey's Anatomy because he adores Sandra Oh. You can watch the interview here

Sandra Oh has never commented on the controversy publicly other than leaving a cryptic remark in Marie Claire, but when asked in an interview if she was sad to see Isaiah Washington go, she said this:

Sandra Oh: How do I say this? For me, it’s been very difficult because I found our storyline very rich. I found it a complicated relationship and I'm sad to see that relationship storyline to have gone. It’s sad.

Would you have liked to see Preston Burke back on Grey's Anatomy to stir things up?

I loved the Charakter of Burke, especially his relationship with O'Malley... But I love the pairing of Christina and Owen, there's just more feelings and passion, with having both being little drama queens, more real.

UM Owen and Cristina forever ! So no, but maybe he could come Back for one episode just so Cristina can rub her perfect life in his face

Burke was a man - a real one. Owen can't even handle Cristina's abortion. Of course I want Burke back!! this storyline seemed so authentic to me and Isaiah is such an INCREDIBLE actor!BRING BURKE BACK!!PLEASE!!!!!!!!!

I'd really love that! Burke and Cristina were so fun to watch, and I don't like Owen. He's a bit childish.

PLEASE BRING BURKE BACK!!

Never, because the cast of Grey's Anatomy deserves to work with people who respect their co-workers and their craft. Sandra Oh herself deserve to work with someone who doesn't go to the press saying "he couldn't push his hips on hers" because he was black.

@me: really? he said that? link please.

Anonymous, TV Guide, november 2008, around the time Brooke Smith was fired. I wasn't able to track a scan (yet), but here's the quote transcription from TWOP.

"There is talk that the departure stems from discomfort over the lesbian characters' graphic sexual relationship. Can you relate?"

"You look at the way another consummate professional's being treated because her character, her story line, potentially made producers uncomfortable. I remember I had one love scene with Sandra Oh, and they stood on the set to make sure I didn't move my hips. Sandra looked at me and said "This is the most sexless love scene I have ever had in my career." I told her, "Look, if you want this scene with this African American man and this Asian woman to get on the air, you better just go on and pretend you're having great sex, because I'm not going to move." And one of the producers was standing on the set at 1am, making sure my hips didn't remotely move to look like we were simulating real sex, whereas it doesn't work that way with Patrick [Dempsey] and Ellen [Pompeo]."

Um, it does not sound like he was blaming anything on the filming of that scene on SO. Sounds like he was bitching about how the producers/directors decided to film the scene.

He must have been talking about the sex scene in the "From a Whisper to a Scream", where Cristina is on top doing all the work and he's just laying there under her.

She said to IW, if she actually said this, who knows for sure, that the scene was the most sexless scene of her career, and I can get SO saying this since she does really, really good love/sex scenes. She's not lacking in sexuality and passion in the least. So when she said that, IW coming from a sensitive whether it be oversensitive or not is another issue, but he was coming from a sensitive to how African-American male actors are shown or rather rarely shown in love scenes on the screen and Iknow exactly what he means. So when she said to him that it was one of the most sexless love scenes she's had in her career his response was in essence to say, that you and I just better play it the way they want the scene to be played with you doing all the moving and me and my lower half staying completely still if we want the scene to get any airtime at all.

Sorry, that's my perception of Sandra's comment and IW's response to her comment. If he was offending anyone it was the producers and directors, since that is who his comments are directed toward as far as I'm reading.

SO can definitely relate in that she has made comments about the inenquities in how minority actors are depicted or not depicted on the screen. IW was just commenting in short on how African-American male actors are not depicted in HIS OPINION or EXPERIENCE on the screen.

I don't agree with him on much but how African-Americans both male and female have been depicted on screens big and small, yeah, I think I might agree with a lot of his thoughts on that subject. A great deal of progress has been made here and there, but please...they have a ways to go.

Heck Lou Gossett Jr. just revealed on this documentary called the "Black List" on HBO, that he was in a some scene years ago and they were worried that his lips were going to look to "big" when he was kissing the actress, (eye roll).

He should and could have been more respectful towards Sandra, by not dragging what he says was her opinion about a scene, as a way to validate his opinion. The comment may be valid, but using Sandra as example this way was just tacky. IMO.

Anonymous said...

I don't see him as using her as an example, well just have to agree to disagree. He never said in his quote that SO shared his views, his quote appears to only be stating his perception and his perception was included in his response to her describing the scene as sexless. Why she thought it was sexless or if she had any views regarding whether or not race played a part in how sexless the scene was is absolutely no where in this quote as I understand it. Only thing that I can tell is that she thought it was sexless and to me that does not equal him using SO to further whatever controversial point or agenda he may have had in his comments.
It's called setting the scene and putting things in context before making his point does not mean he's speaking for SO or her views or lack thereof with regard to race in television and film.

yes, this is the real love story, between cristina and preston. I don't like owen.

Anonymous said...

I'd rather see Burke(Isaiah washington) and cristina(sandra oh) back together.

Anonymous said...

i would love to see burke come back and stir up things.

Anonymous said...

Yes please!!!!! It would be awesome if he came to teach her and to stir things up. He is way better than Owen anyway! Owen needs a different girl.

Anonymous said...

I have always wanted Burke back, especially since we got rid of whiney George...Burke and Yang together was magic!

Anonymous said...

I have never felt any real connection between Owen and Christina. All i see is a guy dramatizing his kisses which are so fake and i guess that's what people equate to be good when its not. I would take back Burke anyday the character was far more interesting than Owen plus he was before and when all the originals were apart of Grey's it was the most magical ever. Bring Back Burke and get rid of Owen.

I believe that actors are "just people" with the difference being that they live out their lives in the public eye. But does that actually give us the right to bash them? No. They make mistakes, they enter into relationships, break up, grow up, fall down and then get back up; just in the public eye. What if we turn the camera around on you, what would we see? Would you be so judgmental if it were your life on display? I think that before we open our mouths to make a comment, think about your own life first. With that said, Isiah Washington is a actor and he's good at what he does...and he just happens to be a fine brother too. I would love to see him back, I stopped watching the show shortly after it left. It just got a little lame, especially the musical episode...that did it for me.

Anonymous said...

I meant to say, "after he left, not it." I was typing way to fast. lol

Anonymous said...

please bring back Burke...

Anonymous said...

Burke and Christina were MAGICK! Owen is..well, every show needs its "Frank Burns". Owen is a weak, damaged, hate-filled, woman-hating drag on this wonderful show. Burke and Christina....Yes. Bring back Burke!

Burke and Christina was magical on a way Christina and Owen never would be. Christina and Burke was the best grey's couple ever. maybe Isaiah was/is an asshole, maybe he maked a mistake. But the CHARACTER Burke was amazing so please bring hom back.

Com tantas pessoas saindo seria otimo que DR burke voltasse pois ele faz muita falta em greys anatomy e tb para balançar o coraçao da Cristina

i would love if they brought Burke back! i like owen, but i don't think owen loves cristina as much as burke did..burke never cheated on her and he still wanted to marry her even if she didnt want to have kids with him

Anonymous said...

I say don't get rid of anyone. Burkes character was very rich and with Cristina they make a damn fine couple. Keep Owen and bring Burke back. Now THAT would be some drama for the show. Especially with Cristina's character and Merideth being her person. I say YES!!!! & why haven't we seen Derick's X wife back to Seattle Grace since Mark died? They need her back too. AAANNNDDDD Richard better not die .. he's the history of Seattle Grace literally besides Bailey!!!

BRING BURKE BACK!! OWEN HAS WAY TOO MANY ISSUES FOR CHRISTINA, AND THE BURKE/CHRISTINA STORYLINE WAS SO INTERESTING!

Anonymous said...

I recently started watching on amazon prime and I was really loving the show till I got to season 4 and realized that Burke is gone.!.!. So the show has really lost my favorite couple and the best story one in the whole show. I haven't even felt an interest to watch it since then. I guess a lot of other people feel the same. Because the ratings really dropped, they should have known better:(

i love Cristina Yonge e Breston Burke together!!

I love Yang and Owen together, and sad to see them break up. He doesn't fit well with anyone else but her. I have yet to watch every episode this season because I don't like where the story line with Yang is going. I know Ms. Oh is leaving the show and when she does, my Grey days will be over. I'll get the DVDs up until the time the show turned dark I liked it when it was light and funny. It's time to pull the plug on Grey's.

i love Burke and Yang together, they compliment each other, both strong willed yet respect each others territory. We all make mistake be it knowningly or unknowingly, the fact remains we make mistakes, so who are we to judge, He apologise, did he commit a grave sin no - so bring him back cause Greyis losing color with all the guys just fading in thin air. The 1st 3 seasons are the best, real, sincere.

Anonymous said...

Totally agree with the last comment. Season 1-3 were the best. Burke and Yang made the show. We all make mistakes but life moves on. Bring them back. All the other casts were great (Season 1-3) but devastated that Burke and Yang ended before their life got started together on the show

Unknown said...

Grey's Anatomy had me at hello.....and Season 1-3 definitely were the best of the best. After Dr. Preston Burke left GA.....I did not mind having to miss an episode. I am a solid Cristina and Burke fan. I love them both and I miss Dr. Burke. Cristina and Burke are perfect. I am just so sad that it had to end.

I would want Burke to come back for Cristina and for Cristina to slip a little bit back to him. Owen realizes how much he's losing with Cristina gone that he gets really jealous leading for an amazing storyline. So yes I do want Burke back however I just want him back to stir things up and really hold the position of making Owen rage with jealousy. We have seen Cristina always wanting to go back to Owen however we've never really seen Owen being mad that Cristina's dating other men. I love Crowen and yes Owen is a little bit childish but I think that's what brings out the child in Cristina. So yes to Burke but also yes to Crowen.

Once Sandra leaves Greys will fall apart. It started when the new interns arrive. I don't know what they're trying to do with Shane and Cristina but its awful. I personally abhor Shane he's my least favorite intern except maybe Leah. They're all just pretty bad. Cristina in my opinion was pretty much the heart of Greys. Sorry Meredith. I'll watch a few episodes to see what they say about Cristina after she leaves but other than that I think I'm done. And I'm pretty sure a lot of us would rather see Grey's end than see Cristina leave. I want to see it end strong rather than see it end because it fell apart. Cristina is pretty much the only reason I left Greys after a lot of the original actors left. Change is good however too much change just makes it all bad. And Sandra leaving will be the end of all the excitement we used to have for Greys.
