At the Hudson Bar on the corner of North Crescent Heights and Santa Monica, I joined at least 200 Canadians (including Sandra Oh, Deborah Kara Unger, the guy who played Rory’s dad on “Gilmore Girls,” the guy who played Joey Potter’s boyfriend in season 3 of “Dawson’s Creek,” and two “Degrassi: The Next Generation” cast members!!) to watch the gold medal game between the U.S. and Canada this afternoon.
Honestly, I expected 15 people sitting around a bar… which would have been nice and intimate, but nothing as exhilarating as this. Like something out of a parallel universe, we cheered and high fived and drank bottomless mimosas decked out in various Canadian garb. And when Canada won, I’ll admit I nearly teared up at how passionate the scene was, finding what was probably the most patriotism I’d ever experienced as we collectively sang “Oh Canada” along with the TV…. And then to walk out into 22 degree February air afterwards - essentially the opposite of Canadian - was a nice touch.
