Nobody Puts Cristina Yang In The Corner

We have a lovely new interview with Sandra for you. She and co-star Kevin McKidd were interviewed together by the Brazilian newspaper, Estadao.

The interview was originally published in Portuguese, and we have used Google Translate for the translation. So when you come across a sentence (or many) that doesn't quite sound right, that is the explanation.

UPDATE: Huge thanks to our wonderful Portuguese speaking reader Me who has edited the translation, so check it out again below.

LOS ANGELES - Sandra Oh came to Seattle Hospital on a motorcycle. "She took off her helmet and hair was everywhere," recalls James Pickens Jr., the Chief. Since then, the actress is always nominated for an Emmy and, in the 3rd year (of the series) she deserved the award for the scene with her non-wedding with Burke (Isaiah Washington). In Grey's Anatomy's fifth year, she and Kevin McKidd lived a romance full of ups and downs, and now Cristina Yang and Owen Hunt's relationship will be threatened/put at risk by Kim Raver. which Estado was part of, the actors talked about their characters.

Cristina will have competition now that Kim Raver arrives to undermine the relationship with Owen ...
Sandra: Really? What's coming? What are you saying? Who?

The blonde from 'Lipstick Jungle'...
Sandra:
Let's see what she can do. Try separate my man from me? Huh!

What will happen?
Sandra: Kim Raver is here (laughs). Until her arrival, our relationship was going well, no?

McKidd: Yes, the momentum of them last season was dealing with Hunt's syndrome. And now the question is who they are in the relationship. They are at this point, right? It is a more normal relationship, part of their everyday.

Sandra: But without the 'will we be together?'. We are connected and now someone else is coming ...

You like twists?
Sandra: Unfortunately we do not know what will happen. Obviously a love triangle is taking place/looming on the horizon. I'm anxious to know what the writers are going to come up for us.

Are you Territorialist* for Cristina?
Sandra: After six years, I feel exceptionally territorialist. This is a great word. If you are writing or living a character, part of your soul goes to him/her.

McKidd: You become very protective.

How was shooting the first episode of the season with the death of O'Malley?
Sandra: It was strange to our cast dynamics. I would like if our characters dealt with it a little more. However, the series must go on. And the death of George is in the past and the writers want us to move forward. But I think we will still remember him, because that is what happens. You go somewhere and remember someone from the past and that memory affects you.

After six years, do you dream about work or Cristina's life?
Sandra: Not about her life, but about people on the set. I dream that I'm talking to the writers ...

What is the downside of being in Grey's, since everyboyd says that the the camaraderie on the set is huge?
Sandra: We will not tell you that (laughs) ... But I can say something else. It isn't a complaint but a comment on where TV (in general) is going. We are one of the last dramas in network TV. There are limitations and creative license, which are positive but also negative. I think that nowdays drama is moving over to cable. And network TV needs to continue producing good one-hour dramas to stay in the game, but I know it is cheaper to produce reality shows, you know? Not a complaint, but a concern.

Did you watch the end of 'E.R.'?
Sandra: I was working. But this (E.R.) is a good example of how network TV in its prime worked. The series hired almost all the actors in Los Angeles.

How do you evaluate Cristina Yang's progress all those years?
Sandra: What I like about last season, with the introduction of Owen Hunt, is that you see another side of Cristina, with the more mature side, with compassion. I like the fact she is still ambitious, competitive and hilarious in that aspect, but I like her maturity (now).

Do you love your character to the point of playing her for other 10 years?
Sandra: I think the writers will be able to build a base that allows rotation. ER had three mains cast at different times.

*Me, our reader who edited the translation, explains: Here, in Portuguese it makes perfectly sense to say 'territorialist', meaning you defend your place, your home, your space, your things, ie. You are very protective of what is yours and that's what the writer was asking, if Sandra marks her territory when it is about Cristina.

If you speak Portuguese, we would love if you could help us out and correct the erroneous translation. Cheers!

Hi, i'm Brazilian (so, i speak portuguese xD)... The expression "coisa do dia a dia" means routine things, not "one thing every day".
"O que vai acontecer?" means "What is gonna happen?", not "You like twists?".
My English is not very good, but i think it's a very good translation =).

I'm not so sure about this, but the newspaper name is Estado (State) or Estadão ("big" State), I don't think you should translate the name, we don't translate The New York Times's name here =).

Here, let me help you. My comments are beween parenteses.

"Romance between Cristina and Owen is at risk" (ameaça= threat, ameaçar=to threaten, ameaçado= threatened, but at risk is a better translation)

Sandra Oh arrived at Seattle Grace on a motorcycle/by a motorcycle. "She took of her helmet and her hair was everywhere," remembers JPJ, who plays the Chief.

Since then the actress is always nominate for an Emmy and, in the 3rd year (of the series)she deserved the award for the scene with her non-wedding with Burke (in English you have marriage and wedding, but in Portuguese the same word, 'casamento' is used for both. The author meant wedding).

In Grey's Anatomy's fifth year, she and Kevin Mckidd lived a romance full of ups and downs, and now Cristina Yang and Owen Hunt's reltionship will be threated/put at risk (same case of the tittle) by Kim Raver. In a chat/talk/intrview ('papo' is very informal, a casual talk, I don't know it 'chat' is the best option, because 'chat' may make people think that it was a web interview and the writer really doesn't say anything - basically the autjor means it was an interview with severeal journalist, and that it was very casual, very informal, in a nice and good way) press, which Estado was part of, the actors talked about their characters.

More to come.

(Mariana already said it, but 'coisa do dia a dia' doesn't mean 'one thing everyday' at all. It means that the relashionship is now part of their daily lives, it is part of their normal lives, their routine. It is something that is incorporated in ther lives.)

Sandra: But wihout the 'will we be together?' (like last season, meaning that now, the the 'will we be together' is not a question anymore or shouldn't be). We are connected and now someone else is coming ...

Do you like twists?
Sandra: Unfortunately we do not know what will happen. Obviously a love triangle is taking place/looming on the horizon. I'm anxious to know what the writers are going to deliver/give to us/come up for us.

Are you territorilist of Cristina?

(the word territorialist) If you are writing or living a character, part of your soul goes to him/her ('você transporta seu espírito para ele' is a litral translation, but doesn't sound good when translated to Enlgish, unless these were Sandra's literal words).

McKidd: You become very protective.

Sandra: It was strange to our cast dynamics.
(not for our dynamic cast) I would like if our characters dealt with it a little more/to see our characters dealing with it a little more. However, the series must go on. And the death of George is in the past and the writers want us to move forward. But I think we will still remember him, because that is what happens. (freedom is literal and doesn't work, what she really means is creative license, poetic license) , which are positive but also negative. I think that nowdays drama is moving over to cable. And network TV needs to continue producing good one-hour dramas to stay in the game, but I know it is cheaper to produce reality shows, you know? Not a complaint, but a concern.

How do you evaluate Cristina Yang's progress all those years?
Sandra: What I like about last season, with the introduction
('presentation' is too literal) of Owen Hunt, is that you see another side of Cristina (again, literal translation doesn't work here. What she means is that we see Cristina displaying more, opening more to the world her mature and compassionate side, that we get to see it, how it happens and what happens) , with the more mature side, with compassion. I like the fact she is still ambitious, competitive and hilarious in that aspect (she meant the competitive side), but I like her maturity (now).

Do you love your character to the point of playing her for other 10 years?
Sandra: I think the writers will be able to build a base that allows rotation. ER had three mains cast at different times.

Sorry for any typo. I hope it helps. For what is worthy, the article is poorly translated to Portuguese, because some of the lines sound too literal, in a way nobody talks in Portuguese. But then when you revert to English, some of them still sound too literal.

Glad I could help!

Just one thing, aftr much discussion with a friend, I think "creative freedom" works too.

Could you please correct my typo in 'territorialist' while explaining the sense in Portuguese?

Thanks!
